St. Tammany Parish School District announces virtual school option for families

The St. Tammany Parish Public School System has announced that it launched a virtual school option for families in the parish.

The STPPS Virtual School is a full-time virtual school open to students in grades K-12 who live in St. Tammany Parish.

“Before the COVID-19 pandemic, plans were being made to open a full-time virtual school to help meet the changing needs of our families and community. The coronavirus re-confirmed the need for a virtual school option, and we were able to expedite our plans to launch in time for the 2020-2021 school year,” said Assistant Superintendent Amiee Lemane.

The STPPS Virtual School is a full-time online school option for students providing the flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere through online courses while still receiving the support of certified teachers and district resources, according to the district.

Learning will be through an online learning platform and students will be expected to follow attendance requirements including working a minimum number of hours each day/week, according to the district.

The district said support will be provided online and in person by certified STPPS teachers, counselors and administrators.

“If a parent is considering this virtual option for a student with an IEP (Individualized Education Program) or IAP (Individual Accommodations Plan), a team meeting must be held to determine if a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) can be provided through a virtual learning platform,” the district said in a statement.

Students will be required to have a computer or tablet and reliable internet access.

“We know many people are eagerly awaiting more information about the upcoming school year. We are working to get that information out quickly, but we wanted to let parents and caregivers know about the STPPS Virtual School as they make the best decisions for their children,” said Interim Superintendent Pete Jabbia.

“At this time, STPPS has general plans for various scenarios to adhere to guidelines that may be in place and the phase our state is in when the school year begins. Although these plans are tentative, the district is preparing to implement any scenario as the situation evolves including distance learning, a hybrid learning experience, and in-person instruction.

“The STPPS Virtual School will begin at the start of the school year and operation will not be dependent on state phases or learning model the rest of the district is using at a given time. Students will be expected to remain enrolled in the virtual school for a minimum of one semester, and students must withdraw from their currently enrolled school to enroll.”

Registration for the STPPS Virtual School is open online and more information is available at
