NOPD: 7 juveniles injured in stolen auto chase in St. Claude

Seven juveniles were injured after crashing a vehicle Friday in St. Claude during what NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said was an authorized police chase.

The police chief said the juveniles were in a stolen vehicle that struck a light pole, a house and three cars near the intersection of North Robertson at Clouet streets. The chase was authorized following a report of an armed carjacking, Ferguson said.

Five boys and two girls were involved in the crash, according to Ferguson.

According to NOPD policy, officers can pursue a vehicle with a supervisor’s approval when:

  • a violent crime suspect is attempting to evade arrest or detention;
  • the suspect’s escape would pose an imminent danger of death or serious injury to the officer or someone else; and
  • the suspect flees after an officer has signaled them to stop.

The public is urged to avoid North Robertson Street between Franklin Avenue and Clouet Street while this incident is being investigated, NOPD said. Drivers are asked to use other routes.
